In the link http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=341523639286985&set=a.341498992622783.64594.100002880559367&type=1&theater

we had mentioned about a primary management of any disease by fasting at

home before visiting a doctor. The focus of the topic was fasting. Today we

add the

Benefits of fasting.

Chakradatta describes benefits of

Langhana (say fasting) in aspect of

Jwara (fever).

Also he mentions jwara is the synonym

of disease.

All diseases arise from loss of appetite

and indigestion (Mandagni). He says-

1. Aama (the partially digested food

juice i.e. Anna rasa) helps the digestion          www.astangayurveda.com

power (jatharagni) get diminished and create disease by blocking the micro

channels (specially the Rasabaha srotas).

2. That is why fasting is advised as the first step of treatment.

3. Fasting stabilizes the destabilized dosha (active principles, i.e. Vata, Pitta

& Kapha) and Agni (digestion power, agni are 13 in number). Also it digests

the imbalanced and exaggerated dosha.

4. It remits the disease, enhances the appetite, interest in food and lightness

in body.

How much fasting?

The fasting should not harm the quality or quantity of your life. Conservation

of strength should be kept in mind. Because strength is the base of good

health and here objective of fasting is nothing but a remitted good health.

People, to avoid fasting:-

People with neurological disorder, hunger, thirst, dryness in oral cavity, head

reeling, child, old age, pregnancy, weakness should avoid fasting.

Sign and symptoms of Perfect fasting:

1. Easy excretion of stool, urine and flattus.

2. Lightness in body and heart.

3. Clear eructation.

4. Cleanliness in mouth, sensory pleasure of taste.

5. Lack of letharge and depression.

6. Sweating, interest in food, strong appetite and thirst

7. Pleasure in mind.

All these signs and symptoms indicate a perfect fasting.

Sign and symptoms of Excessive fasting:

1. Pain in joints, body pain, cough, dryness in mouth, diminished appetite,

lack of interest in food, thirst.

2. Weakness of vision and hearing.

3. Unstable mental state.

4. Eructation.

5. Wasting of body, digestion power and strength.

Controlled fasting is good. Conservation of digestion power is best.

Happy New Year

Wish you all a Happy New Year. Wish you all a Odia Happy New Year. This first day of the Odia new year is celebrated all over India, especially in Odisha as the Happy Birth Day of Lord Hanuman.
This Super man was born on this first day of the year.

This is celebrated as the Maha Bishuba Samkranti or  the Pana samkranti. At this point of the calender year the sun revolves around the equatorial line (or Bishuba Rekha) of the earth.

This auspicious occasion is celebrated with intake of Bael Pana or the juice of Bilwa or Aegle Marmelos.
This juice is prepared with the juice of the inner pulp of Bael or the wood apple. It is mixed with milk, water, curd, ripe banana, jaggery, black pipper, bhanga etc.  it is highly nourishing, a good laxative, stomach friendly and above all very very tasty.

Next time I will come with the properties of Bilwa and the life style in summer season.

Again wish you all a Happy New year.

Back pain treatment

The first line of treatment for back pain is bed rest. It helps the alignment of the back bone. It prevents compression of the vertebrae. It prevents inflammation. It prevents degeneration. It helps revitalization of  the total entity.

This should be followed by strict guidelines for food and life style fixed by Astang Ayurveda. Food like black gram, white rice (Basmati rice), curd, ripe banana, white flour, egg, crab, chilled food worsens the disease. Like wise life style like day sleep, late night bed, prolonged standing and sitting, stereo type posture damages the health of the vertebral column.

Bone is considered too be the site of Vata. It is nourished by medicines prepared with bitter, astringent herbs and fatty materials extracted from herbs or animal products. The fatty nature of the oil or ghee counters the dry nature of Vata. When the medicated ghee or oil is warm in temperature it subsides the cold nature of vata, it subsides the pain due to inflammation.

The different herbs present in the compound medicines helps toning the muscle, ligaments. They prevent deposition of osteophytes.

Application of medicated enema eliminates the exaggerated vata, along with the feces. The enema called Asthapan basti rehabilitates the neurological function derailed earlier due to the deficit caused by vertebral compression.

Other Ayurvedic treatments meant for back pain management manages some other consequences like, burning sensation, muscle wasting, stiffness, numbness, swelling etc.

All  the above mentioned treatments never include any type of surgical interference and manual manipulation of the vertebral column.

Back Pain Treatment

http://www.astangayurveda.com/pivd-treatment-protocol/

I strongly advocate to avoid laminectomy or discectomy  (in short spinal surgery) if it is not badly necessary for the doctor to make a decision. But why?

1. There is risk.

2. There is chance of complication.

3. There is chance of failure.

4. There is chance of recurrence.

5. There is chance of "no scope for further treatment".

6. Only surgery cannot help without the support of physiotherapy.

Back pain treatment can be classified into medicinal, surgical, physiotherapy and alternative medicines. Now a days Ayurvedic treatment for low back pain has come out as a big solution.

All of the above problems can be by-passed with the help of Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment at Astang Ayurveda ( Visit http://www.astangayurveda.com/ ).

1. The treatment is done with some internal medicine and external soft touch treatment. There is no risk.

2. The herbs are natural like the vegetarian food and the treatment are very soft, external, sophisticated, logic based, time tasted. There is no chance of complications.

3. The Ayurvedic treatment may fail in handling the disease, but it will not leave the disease devastated like any other treatment, specially the surgery. At this point, with no success it is not a failure.

4. There is least chance of recurrence of the low back pain, as the the muscles, nerves, ligaments are toned with the different types of Ayurvedic treatments.

5. As Ayurveda panchakarm treatment is a natural treatment and does not interfere into the physiology or pathology of the disease, any further treatment can be taken to manage PIVD.

6. Vyayam cikitsa is an ancient practice in Ayurveda which is similar to physiotherapy. Thus Ayurveda is a complete package for the treatment of PIVD.

Next time I will come with the line of treatment of back pain.

What is back pain

Hi, Friends,
I am back again. From the point back, I remember low back pain. Most of the low back pain may be the result of spondylosis, prolapsed intervertebral disc (PIVD), slip disc etc. In modern medicine there is no such successful treatment for the problem. Ayurveda has established some sort of solutions which gives a permanent rehabilitation unlike the modern spinal surgery.

A failure case of spinal surgery. Note the scar mark at the centre. Finally the case came to Astang Ayurveda.

Just go through the following paragraph-

PID: Prolapsed inter vertebral Disc. A night mare for the victim who has ever come across PID. In this case you may experience pain in low back, burning sensation in low back, pain radiating from low back to legs, numbness in toes , legs, weakness in standing, paresis etc. Your doctor may say you there is stenosis, bulging, herniation, compression of spinal chord. It is true. They may suggest you spinal surgery as treatment. It is half true. Because with surgery the compression will be removed, not the process of compression. That is, the herniated mass will be removed and the pressure will be released. But what about the process of compression of the lumbar ( low back ) vertebrae? With time there will be compression followed by pain and other difficulties.

Astang Ayurveda panchakarma treatment helps you avoiding the risky surgical interference, rehabilitating the pain and preventing compression. Its specialized neuro care activities SNAYU takes care of the problem.

If the panchakarma fails you have another chance called surgery. If the surgery fails....?

Next time I will come with the solution.

What is sex | Sex eduation

www.astangayrveda.com

Maithuna(Sex):

Maithuna or sex is one of the vital basic needs of life. It is otherwise called Grahysthya Bramhacharya. Lots of guidelines have been described regarding fair maithuna (sex). Lots of contradictions have been fixed for maithuna.

Maithuna should remain within limit so that it cannot destabilize the physical and mental state. Favourable situation for maithuna is highly emphasized in Ayurveda.  It is advised to have maithuna on every 3rd day in vasanta (spring season) and sarata (Autumn season) ritu, with a gap of a fortnight in rainy and summer season and according to own interest in hemanta (Dew) and sisisra (Winter) ritu.

After maithuna bath, moon bath, milk, non-veg soup, wine, juice, sleep are advised. Age of the partner should not be less than 16 years or more than 70 years.

Many more have been described regarding maithuna. Maharshi Vatsayana, Charaka, Sushruta, Vagbhatta have written a lot over it.

About Dreams | Dream

Swapna (dream)

Sarvendriyavyuparatau manoanuparatam yada.
Vishayebhyastada swapnam nana rupam prapasyati..

When all the sense organs get detached of their subjects but the mind still remains attached, then comes the dream.

How to sleep | About sleep

Today, very early morning I got up to administer 60 ml of  Tiktaka Ghrita (Medicated ghee) just at the sun rise to my Psoriasis patient who lives in the in patient department. Like any other Tuesday I went to temples. Obviously now I am tired and long for a sound sleep. I am blessed with a habit of sound sleep. Thank God.

Sleep is the second of the trilogy (Traya upastambha) that we discus for last some days.

Sleep comes normally at night.

Lokadisarga prabhava tamomula tamomayi.

Bahulyat tamaso ratro nidra prayena jayate..

During the creation of the universe there was Tama i.e. darkness. The nidra is also originates from the tama guna. That is why the nidra comes normally at night.

Sleshmavruteshu srotahsu shramat uparateshu cha

Indriyeshu swakarmabhyo nidra vishati dehinam.

When the sleshma the bi product of Aahara rasa covers all the micro channels, all the sense organ get tired of their subjects and stay detached, and then comes the role of nidra.

Benefits of Sleep:

Nidrayatam sukham dukham pustih karshyam valavalam.

Vrishata klivata gyanamagyanam jivitam na cha..

Sukha (Happiness), duhkha (Sorrow), pusti (Nourishment), krushata (Emaciation), bala (Strength), abala (Weakness), vrishata (Power of sex), klivata (Loss of sexual activity), gyana (Knowledge), agynata (Ignorance), jivana (Life), Mrityu (Death) all are under the control of sleep.

Excessive sleep, little sleep, sleeping in odd time will devastate the happiness from life and the life itself.

Awaken night brings rukshata (Dryness), while day sleep brings unnecessary  snigdhata (oiliness, say deranged lipid profile) in body.

Sleeping interruptedly in a sitting position in day time is good.

Those who speak, travel, walk, indulge in sex, booze, lift weight, get angry, stressed regularly, diseased person, child, old, traumatized may sleep in the day time.

Obesed person, oil and ghee consuming person should not sleep in the day time. Poisoned and person with a throat disease should not sleep at night. In summer season day sleep is allowed.

Excessive sleep will enhance the kapha that calms down the digestion power, as a reason the channels get blocked. That brings heaviness and leatharge to the body those again enhance the bad habit of excessive sleep.

Not only me The Ayurveda says this.

Indian food | Ayurveda food habit

Aahara Kalpana

Indian food unlike many other continental food is prepared with different oil, spice, flavours, essence etc. These are not there attract the foody people. The process is there to secrete salive, create interest in food, eliminate distraction from food and properly digest the food taken.

Coming back from my last diversified article on Basanta ritu charya, today I write some thing about the proper guide line for intake of food.

There are seven Kalpana or program which are to be considered during intake of food.

Swabhava (say nature)- By swbhava some food are guru (heavy)/ laghu (light), snigdha (rich by ghee)/ ruksha (dry) etc.

Samjoga- By combination food behaves differently.

Samskara- By samskara or value addition food acquire new properties.

Matra (Quantity)- Amount of food is to be considered.

Desha (Geoclimatic condition)- Regionality of food and the person.

Kala (Time)- Kala waits for stages of disease, digestion and season.

Upyoga Bybastha- It says about the dos and don'ts during intake of food.

Do not take food
Take food
Without taking bath, with a single dress, nude, dirty dress, without offering food to God, without arranging food for pets and servants, so hot food, Charred food, Unknown food, evening, early morning, under open sky, in darkness, under the tree, on the bed, keeping first finger straight, taking the plate on hand, keeping the plate on your seat,
At suitable place, suitable time, in dinning space, clean dishes, with friends, after washing hands and legs, facing east, served by a well wisher, with holistic approach, putting on five sense organs.
